This video based lecture series conducted by Professor Richard Garfield, PhD, Columbia University School of Nursing, covers ways to analyze information during major humanitarian emergencies. Professor Garfield discusses how to obtain pre-crisis information, resources for the collection and analysis of information, and methods for determining when qualitative and quantitative data should be incorporated into research. He also highlights the pros and cons of working with datasets from the World Bank, the IMF, the UN, UNICEF, the US Census, along with several other online resources.

Course Objective:

The purpose of this course is to:

  • Provide a basic understanding of what a researcher needs to know when going into the field immediately after a major humanitarian emergency

  • A well written research report is expected to have validity, reliability, and generalizability
  • One of the most powerful data comparisons possible is a comparison over time
  • Randomized data samples are always preferable when doing field research in developing nations, but not always possible due to time and financial constraints
