Description

PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS A BETA VERSION OF OUR 'THE NURSE'S ROLE AND CLIMATE CHANGE' COURSE. THE MODULE IS CURRENTLY UNDER REVISION BASED ON FEEDBACK.

Without substantial changes in emissions rates, climate change from the buildup of greenhouse gases is likely to lead to extensive transformations of U.S. ecosystems and coastlines later this century. The U.S. Department of Defense's 2010 Quadrennial Defense Review recently determined that climate change will contribute to food and water scarcity, may spur or exacerbate global mass migration, and will increase negative health consequences. The online course specifically addresses the nursing role in climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies. It includes a pre-test, a one hour interactive module incorporating a case study, and a post test.

Objectives

Course Objectives

The goals of this course are to:

  • Familiarize the learner to the basic concepts of and trends related to climate change and health effects.
  • Familiarize the learner to the nurse’s professional role in response to negative health effects associated with direct and indirect impacts of climate change
  • Explore the relationship of climate change to a vector-borne disease outbreak through an applied case study simulation

Key Messages:

  •  Climate change is real.
  •  Climate change directly and indirectly impacts our environment and our health.
  •  Nurses play a critical role in addressing climate change problems and protecting human health: individual, community and global.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe 3 climate change trends supported by scientific evidence
  • Recognize 3 key negative environmental effects caused by climate change
  • Specify 6 direct and indirect negative health effects that result from the impact of climate change
  • Recognize adaptation strategies
  • Identify at least 3 steps  nurses can take to personally and professionally address climate change problems
